GLORIOSA SUPERBA

Tamil name : Kathikai kilanku, Kalappai kilanku, Senkanthal (Tamil).
The medicinal importance of Gloriosa superba is due to the presence of alkaloids in all parts of the plant, mainly colchicine (superbine), an amino alkaloid derived from the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. The presence of colchicine-type alkaloids with a tropolone ring is characteristic for most genera in Colchicaceae. The seeds are the best source of colchicine, as their content is 2–5 times higher than in the tubers.
Medicinal uses: Clochicine is used in various drugs and the uses are Anticancer, Anti-malarial, stomachache, Purgative, Cholagogue, Anthelmin, Alterative, and Febrifuge. In Ayurveda, the tuber is anthelmintic and abortifacient. It is also effective against paralysis, snake bite, insect bites.

Medicinal Properties and Uses:
Shatavari is an indigenous medicinal plant used in Siddha, Ayurvedic and Homoeopathy medicines. In India, Shatavari is considered the women's equivalent to Ashwagandha. The name translates to "she who possesses 100 husbands", referring to the herbs rejuvanitive effect upon the female reproductive organs. Shatavari roots are used mainly as galactagogue which stimulates the secretion of breast milk. It is applied in improving the lost body weight and also known as an aphrodisiac. The root is useful in treating the ailments like dysentery, tuberculosis and diabetes. Commonly, it supports to maintain the health by giving immunity to diseases.

SARPGANDHA (Rauwolfia Serpentina)

Sarpgandha is an important medicinal plant of India. Its roots are used for the treatment of snakebite, insect nervous disorders, mania and epilepsy. It is also useful in the treatment of hypertension and works as a sedative or tranquilizing agent. The roots are also used in skin disorders, excessive sweating and itching.

Photochemical The powdered root (Rauwolfia Serpentina) generally contains anywhere from 0.15% to 0.2% active alkaloid (reserpine and rescinnamine) by weight. Rauwolfia is cultivated for the medicinal use of its 30 alkaloids (particularly reserpine found in the root), many used in treating hypertension. Besides reserpine, other alkaloids used in hypertension and other cardiac disorders are ajmaline, rescinnamine, serpentinine, sarpagine, deserpidine, and chandrine.

The lotus leaves are used for lowering blood lipids and treating fatty liver; it is commonly combined with crataegus, which promotes blood circulation and lowers blood fats, for that purpose.
Lotus roots have been found to be rich in dietary fiber, vitamin C, potassium, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, copper, and manganese, while very low in saturated fat

WITHANIA SOMNIFERA

Withania somnifera, or Ashwagandha, is native to drier parts of India and the Old World. It is a perennial herb that reaches about 6 feet (2 m) in nature. The plants contain the alkaloids withanine and somniferine, which are used to treat nervous disorders, intestinal infections and leprosy. All plant parts are used including the roots, bark, leaves, fruit and seed. Chemical constituents of withania somnifera Roots contain choline, tropanol, pseudotropanol, cuscohygrene, 3-tigloyloxytropane, isopelletierine, anaferine and anahygrine. Withasomnine also has been isolated from the roots. The roots also have been reported to contain withaferin A and several other steroidal lactones including pharmacologically active withanolides. These were also isolated as minor constituents of the leaves. Medicinal uses: The tuberous roots are astringent, bitter, acrid, somniferous, thermogenic, stimulant, aphrodisiac, diuretic and tonic. They are useful in vitiated conditions of vata, leucoderma, constipation, insomnia, tissue-building and nervous breakdown. ADHATODA VASICA

It is a small evergreen, subherbacious bush. The Leaves are 10 to 16 cms in length, minutely pubescent and broadly lanceolate. The inflorescence is dense, short pedunculate, bractate and spike terminal. The corolla is large and white with lower lip streaked purple. The fruit is a 4-seeded small capsule.

Withania somnifera, or Ashwagandha, is native to drier parts of India and the Old World. It is a perennial herb that reaches about 6 feet (2 m) in nature. The plants contain the alkaloids withanine and somniferine, which are used to treat nervous disorders, intestinal infections and leprosy. All plant parts are used including the roots, bark, leaves, fruit and seed. Chemical constituents of withania somnifera Roots contain choline, tropanol, pseudotropanol, cuscohygrene, 3-tigloyloxytropane, isopelletierine, anaferine and anahygrine. Withasomnine also has been isolated from the roots. The roots also have been reported to contain withaferin A and several other steroidal lactones including pharmacologically active withanolides. These were also isolated as minor constituents of the leaves. Medicinal uses: The tuberous roots are astringent, bitter, acrid, somniferous, thermogenic, stimulant, aphrodisiac, diuretic and tonic. They are useful in vitiated conditions of vata, leucoderma, constipation, insomnia, tissue-building and nervous breakdown. The leaves are bitter and are recommended in fever, painful swellings and ophthalmitis. A paste of the roots and bruised leaves are applied to carbuncles, ulcers and painful swellings.

It is a small evergreen, subherbacious bush. The Leaves are 10 to 16 cms in length, minutely pubescent and broadly lanceolate. The inflorescence is dense, short pedunculate, bractate and spike terminal. The corolla is large and white with lower lip streaked purple. The fruit is a 4-seeded small capsule.
Medicinal uses: The leaves are rich in vitamin C and carotene and yield an essential oil. The shrub is the source of the drug, well known in indigenous systems of medicine for its beneficial effects, particularly in bronchitis. The leaves, flowers, fruits and roots are extensively used for treating cold, cough, whooping-cough, chronic bronchitis and asthma.

Thorn Apple is a spreading herb common in wastelands, along the roadside and railway lines and in scrub-jungles. It contains Scopolamine (Hyoscine) that shows analgesic and sedative actions and produces amnesia. It also possesses anti-inflammatory property.
Medicinal uses: All parts of the Thorn apple have medicinal value .It is narcotic, anti spasmodic, anodyne, ache reliever. Helps in relieving the spasm of the bronchitis in asthma. It is used in treatment of Parkinson’s diseases and haemorrhoids. Young fruits are sedative and intoxicating. Leaves applied after roasting are useful in relieving pain. Atropine extracted from plant dilates the pupils and is used in eye surgery. Fruit juice is applied to the scalp to treat dandruff.
For rheumatic joints, ingrowing nails and burns leaf poultice is applied. For pain and inflammation of breasts leaf poultice along with turmeric is applied. Leaf poultice is also applied to pubic region to relieve pain during menstruation and on inflamed breasts. Leaf juice boiled in bland oil is an effective skin ointment. Fruit paste with turmeric is applied on inflamed breast. Seed paste used against parasitic skin diseases.
Toxicity:
All parts of Datura plants contain tropane alkaloids such as scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine, primarily in their seeds and flowers. Its dangerous levels of poison may be fatal if ingested by humans or animals, including livestock and pets.
